Admissions and Financial Assistance

Admissions

For admission to the master of science program, candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a grade point average of at least 3.00/4.00. Applicants who have not graduated from an engineering program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET must submit combined scores of at least 1195 on the verbal and quantitative parts of the GRE. There is no minimum score on the writing section of the GRE.

Graduates of other engineering disciplines or closely related mathematics and science disciplines are encouraged to apply for admission to the mechanical engineering graduate program. Some prerequisite mechanical engineering undergraduate course work may be required. Interested applicants should contact the department to discuss possible prerequisite needs.

Candidates for admission to the doctoral program should have a master of science in mechanical engineering or closely allied field. Applicants who have do not have a bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited engineering program must submit combined verbal and quantitative GRE scores of at least 1195.

Early admission to the doctoral program is available for outstanding candidates with bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering. For direct admission to the doctoral program, an applicant must have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.3/4.0 as computed by The University of Alabama. Those who did not graduate from an ABET accredited engineering program must submit combined verbal and quantitative GRE scores of at least 1300. Financial Assistance

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers financial assistance to outstanding applicants in the form of teaching and research assistantships. A half-time teaching or research assistantship provides a competitive stipend and a full-tuition scholarship for the academic year. A student applying for graduate studies in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is automatically considered for a departmental assistantship during the review of the application materials. Continuing students must complete the departmental assistantship application. Notices of continuing assistantship applications and deadlines are made by the Department during fall and spring semesters. The Department awards teaching assistantships (GTA) on the basis of expected teaching ability. An individual faculty member, who has sponsored research funds at the professor’s disposal, awards research assistantships (GRA). A GRA appointment is made on the basis of mutual interests between student and professor. Only students who maintain an acceptable performance level are eligible for assistantships.

Graduate fellowships are also available through the GAANN Doctoral Fellowship Program.
